Perhaps in extreme conditions when someone might hurt others, it might be necessary to keep someone in solitary confinement, but even there—could there be another way?.
And to think that any of us, in the wrong circumstance, could find ourselves in a hole like that from which we couldn't crawl out (although the odds are certainly stacked, in this country, against people of color).
Our society would cast people off and not have to think about them (the incarcerated, the mentally disturbed, etc.) But we are all connected. That is the reality. So I return to your words: "when we raise people up, we elevate ourselves."
